Discover the remains of the medieval castle Hindsgavl – a historic site on the coast.

The name Hindsgavl is first mentioned in King Valdemar's Land Book from 1231, where a medieval castle is believed to have been located. In 1295, the place is directly mentioned when King Erik Menved at Hindsgavl entered into a truce with the Norwegian king Erik Magnusson Præstehader.

Northwest of the current Hindsgavl are the remains of the old castle close to the coast. The complex consists of an approximately 15-meter-high, oval castle bank with a plateau of approximately 85 x 70 meters. Part of the western slope has today been eroded away by the Little Belt, while the other sides are surrounded by a 5–8-meter-wide, water-filled moat.

The surrounding meadow, which was previously swampy, provided natural protection against attack. Access was via a causeway from the east, leading to the castle's barnyard on a low rise south of the bank. From here a drawbridge and a road led up to the top of the castle, where remains of the foundations of the medieval buildings can still be seen.
