Get the story in your ears and hear how travelers on the Hærvejen had to choose between crossing the dangerous Farris Forest or taking a long detour.

If we go back a few hundred years, travelers on the Hærvejen encountered an obstacle in the form of a huge forest. It was called the Farris Forest and stretched from the Little Belt in the east to Ribe in the west. It was about 60 kilometers wide and 11 kilometers long. The Jels area was thus covered in forest. It was difficult and potentially dangerous here - wolves and perhaps robbers hid in the dense undergrowth. Some probably chose to cross through the forest, while others chose a major detour on one of the branches of the Hærvejen further west.

If we travel even further back in time to when the ice in the last ice age retreated, there was tundra here at Jels. This is where the reindeer came, and after them came reindeer hunters. Some of the first people in Denmark came here to Jels to hunt the reindeer - the tunnel valley, where the lakes are today, created a good area to kill the animals.

The audio narration is best suited for the stage between Skodborg and Jels, so if you listen to it on the Hærvejs route, we recommend that you listen to it on this stage.

How to find the audio story
You can find the audio story about the Farris forest around Jels in the VisitVejen App. You can download it for free wherever you usually download apps for your mobile phone.

The audio story in the app does not have its own URL or address that we can link to. Therefore, in the app, you must select the main menu item The major hiking trails, and then the Hærvejen. You will then get a number of menu items that are about facilities and experiences along the Hærvejen. Here you then select Audio stories and then Hærvejsknudepunkt Jels. The audio stories can be heard while you are walking on the Hærvejen - or anywhere at home, including in your living room. The course of the story does not depend on you being out on the route.

You can also listen to the audio story about the Hærvejknudepunkt Jels hereHere is also a transcription of the audio narration.
